Luna d’Terra is a Love Story
The white Moons are beautiful tokens of graduation and fulfillment of Your year of herbal study that originated with my Mentor, Donna d’Terra who decided to buy them her friend to gift her students with at their graduation ceremony. Her Herbal Mentor was Rosemary Gladstar who was gifted one of the moons and so loved the idea that she started giving them to the graduates of her herbal study course, The Science and Art of Herbalism. This has been going on for many years and the man who used to carve them out of bone no longer does. I started teaching my classes pre-covid and I asked Donna if it would be ok if I gave them to my students as well. Her resounding yes was music to my ears and it seemed everything was falling into place- so I reached out to see if I could order from the original creator only to find out that that no longer was a possibility. The moons were still made by someone else, but were no longer made of bone and were a composite. The bone is special. It seemed a no brainer to me to carve them myself. My first moons were rustic and made of Antler and were so so special. Seeing my students who still wear them everyday makes my heart so full.
I don’t want to harm anything ever so I began searching and hiking and finding sources of bone that met my standards. I’m gifted incredible pieces of Elk, deer, cow, horn and antler all from sacred hunts where nothing is wasted and ranchers who’s cows lived out their lives grazing with the seasons.
The honor of carrying these moons on is more than I can ever say. A gift from my teacher, my mentor and my friend when I graduated Herb School a lifetime ago- has become so much more; it has become a effigy of a lineage of herbalists that start with Juliet deBarclay Levy through Rosemary Gladstar through Donna dTerra and to me and to my students— the absolute coolest thing is that I know a gaggle of women heralding from all corners that can say the same- I am but one part- a single seed in an endless and ever growing legacy of brilliant and potent blossoming medicine makers. If you see a woman wearing this moon- chances are she is an herbalist and most definitely a sister of mine. Being a woodcarver, it was a natural transition for me to carve the moons- I’m lucky enough to have an incredible community who support me and carving these fill my heart with so much happiness. There is a new generation of herbalists emerging- people of all walks of life and I am so here for it. This lineage, this circle is ever ever growing and that’s what it’s all about!
